Sound Testing
Building Testing Specialists

Sound testing, also known as sound insulation testing, is a mandatory requirement for building developers and landlords who are constructing new buildings or carrying out major refurbishments. The purpose of sound testing is to ensure that the walls and floors between adjoining dwellings meet the minimum acoustic performance standards set out in Building Regulations Approved Document E. This helps to prevent noise disturbance and ensure a comfortable living environment for occupants.

Many new builds now have an as built requirement to ensure that they meet the acoustic requirements of Building Regulations Part E. Where this has not been designed in, or in conversion projects, testing is required to ensure the regulations are met.

Pre-approved contruction method

It is worth noting that there are some exceptions to the sound testing requirements, particularly for larger developments of multiple new dwellings where a "robust detail" construction method can be used. This is a pre-approved construction method that has been tested and proven to meet the required acoustic standards, and so negates the need for a pre-completion sound test.

Sound insulation performance

Sound testing involves measuring the sound insulation performance of separating walls and floors between dwellings using specialist equipment. The tests are carried out by qualified acoustic engineers who will provide a detailed report on the results of the tests. If the test results show that the building does not meet the minimum requirements, then remedial work will need to be carried out until the minimum standard is achieved.

Sound testing Compliance

Overall, it is important to comply with sound testing requirements and ensure that the minimum acoustic standards are met in order to provide a comfortable living environment and prevent noise disturbance. If you require sound testing services, contact us and we can help you to arrange the necessary tests.

Service Benefits

Why do I need a sound insulation test?

When residential properties are joined to one another, Building Regulations require that the noise transfer between the properties is below a certain level to ensure a comfortable living environment for all residents. This can either be the walls between properties (e.g. in a terrace or houses) or the floor (e.g. an apartment/flat). Where a flat is created above a commercial premises, the transfer of noise through the floor must also be checked. A sound insulation test can check the noise transfer and determine if the sound insulation is sufficient.

When do I need a sound test?

Sound tests are usually completed towards the end of the build project but must be done before carpets are installed. Hence the term “pre-completion sound test”

How do I pass my sound test?

Building acoustics can be complicated, however there are a wide range of products and design systems that have a proven track record of meeting performance standards. Advance planning and design for any new separating walls or floors is always recommended to achieve the best results.

What are Part E sound test requirements?

Building regulations required levels are determined by development type as below:

  • Box list of performance values

How to we test acoustic sound transfer?

Our sound test engineers use our UKAS calibrated equipment to monitor sound transfer through walls and floors. A specially designed speaker (a bit like a disco ball with speakers all around) is set up and readings are taken with a microphone and meter. Multiple sets of readings, including ambient background noise, are monitored to provide the result. Party floor testing also requires a tapping machine to create direct impact noise, equivalent to people walking around, which can be monitored. Sound testing is quite a noisy job so all our engineers wear ear protectors and we recommend everyone else vacates the area!

I’m just starting my project, can you offer advice?

Yes, as well as offering testing at the end of the project, our engineers can assist with planning your acoustic spec:

  • As existing test
We can perform a test on the existing walls or floors of buildings to understand its acoustic performance. This will provide information on any required improvements to achieve Building Regulations on the completed properties.

  • Acoustic spec
Our engineers can provide a detailed acoustic specification, recommending products and build ups to meet Building Regulations. We have considerable experience with all types of buildings including new builds and historic conversions and can offer site visits to design genuine bespoke solutions to suit the client and building requirements.
